What happens when a young man's leftwing humanitarian ideals run headfirst into the cynical realities of urban life? Such is the question that lies at the heart of Belgian director Jan Verheyen's Dutch-language seriocomedy Los. Pepijn Caudron stars as Tom, a politically liberal, twentysomething journalist gearing up to move in and settle down with his longtime girlfriend. Then a gorgeous Pakistani refugee named Nadia (Sana Mouziane) turns up, and openly challenges all of his presuppositions about the way the world works. Meanwhile, Tom's grandfather engages in his own struggle, protesting adamantly for his right to die in the face of a terminal illness.
