Eight year old Mark dreams of having a pet. His hart goes out to the little red kitten in the shop window of the local pet store. There is only one problem; his dad don't want any pets in their house. The reason is that he has got the cleanest butcher shop in town and would like to keep it that way. Mark's friend Boris feels sorry for Mark that he can't have a pet, so he gives him his rat Billy for one night. Mark ignores his fathers prohibition and takes Billy home. If Billy escapes, Mark can't tell his parents and there starts a thrilling search. Billy the rat ends up in the butcher shop after closing time and, by accident, he got locked up in the freezer. After dinner Mark goes alone to the butcher shop. He finds Billy, but because of a little accident, his dad walks in all of a sudden and finds the rat. His dad sends Mark to bed en is trying to haunt down the rat. When the night falls, Mark sneaks to the butcher shop again. He sees Billy and is amazed that he can pick up the rat so easily. Then Mark discovers a box of rat poison and is shocked. Back in his bedroom he finds out that Billy is sick. Mark is afraid that Billy wil die. After a long night Mark wakes up and sees, still sitting next to the rat, a dozen of kiddy rats. In the meanwhile, when his dad is amazed that the amount of rat poison in the box is still the samen, Mark sneaks out of the house with Billy and the little rats. Boris wants to give Mark one of the kiddy rats, but Mark refuses. He will never take a pet into his house again. But when he walks home, and sees that the little red kitten is disapeard from the petshop window shop, he is dissapointed. He wanted this kitten so badly.....When Mark is home, he falls down in his chair with a really sad face. His amazing is big when he feels something tickeling at his feet................
